Robert Fabricant, M.D., hits Milestone 50 Years in Practice

07/31/2017

Dr Robert FabricantBarnabas Health Medical Group congratulates Robert Fabricant, M.D., who has been practicing with Ocean Gynecological and Obstetrical Associates (OGOA), part of Barnabas Health Medical Group, since 1967. The first of July marked his 50th year in private practice. Dr. “Fab” as his patients and colleagues affectionately refer to him, earned a medical degree at New York Medical College and completed a residency at Metropolitan Hospital also in New York. Following residency, he joined the Army and was stationed in Fort Hood, Texas. With around 200 deliveries a month at the base, instead of being deployed to Vietnam, he stayed and delivered the military families’ babies for two years

In 1967, he moved to New Jersey and started practicing with OGOA. He still remembers his first patient, after 15 years in training, who told him, “You are a nice boy sonny, but $15 for a visit?” Over the years, he has held numerous roles at RWJ Barnabas Health, including Chairman of the Obstetrics and Gynecology department, President of the Foundation, and President of the Medical Staff at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus. In addition to his medical work, he is past Flotilla Commander of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Dr. Fabricant is a past recipient of the Humanitarian of the Year Award from Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus. He has assisted in more than 5,000 deliveries.

While medicine has changed a lot over the years, Dr. Fabricant insists he has stayed the same in a few regards. He continues to provide a complete physical exam to all of his patients, nothing that, “if you pay attention when you examine someone, you find something, and sometimes that is a life-saving something.” He also said he continues to keep his sense of humor, cool under pressure demeanor and patient-centered care mentality.

When asked why he has continued to practice for over 50 years he said, “I thought I made a difference in people’s lives. I enjoy seeing my patients. I am a story teller and I care about my patients and their stories. I always figure out where they are from and try to relate to them, it makes them feel more comfortable.” In fact, he can say hello in well over a dozen languages. He also noted that “ If I ever do retire, I will miss my patients dearly, because they have become my family.”

Dr. Fabricant -- not only have you made a different in your patients’ lives, but you have also made an impact on everyone at RWJBarnabas Health. We thank you for 50 years of incredible service, and look forward to the future.
