Bloodless Medicine

Overview

Various medical and ethical reasons have led some patients to elect for bloodless medicine, a variety of treatment options that do not involve the use of blood transfusions. These bloodless techniques – which may include diet, medication, surgical techniques and more – can be performed before, during and after surgery. The goals of bloodless medicine include:

  • Increasing your red blood cell count prior to surgery
  • Monitoring oxygen delivery during surgery
  • Avoiding blood loss during surgery
  • Collecting and reusing your own blood during surgery

Barnabas Health Medical Group physicians work with each patient to determine the best method for treatment while respecting his or her beliefs.
